At one point the Fast & Furious franchise wasn’t going to go beyond the third installment. Now four movies later the franchise is still going strong. Furious 7 was one of the biggest movies of 2015, and we can expect at least three more movies to follow.
There is a lot of speculation as to how the eighth movie can compare to the seventh movie, especially because each movie has been bigger than the previous one. When the eighth installment was first announced there were rumors that it was going to take place in New York, but there was also more recent news that it was going to film in Cuba. Other than that there is still very little we know about the future films.
The film’s director, F. Gary Gray, spoke to Collider about the upcoming film and how it will stand out among the other installments.
“I’m probably not at liberty to go too far into detail,” he said. “All I have to say is I’m extremely excited about the direction we’re going in, and we’re really pushing to make sure the audience feels like it’s not more of the same. They feel like it’s fresh, they feel like the characters they’ve come to know and love are there, but this is gonna be different, and that’s probably the most I can give you right now.”
It is hard to imagine the series going on without Paul Walker. I still have a hard time watching any one of the movies without feeling sad about his passing. But I am curious as to what they are going to do to make the upcoming films different, but yet still make them feel like they are part of the franchise.
I think there is a lot of potential, and I look forward to hearing more about the movie as more information comes out.
The eighth installment is expected to hit theaters April 14, 2017.
