Disney’s announced a release date re-shuffle, but it’s good news for Pirates of the Caribbean fans!
Star Wars: Episode VIII has been pushed back from May to December 2017, but that means Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales has been bumped up from July to fill the May slot!
A May release did pretty well for the fourth instalment of the franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which grossed $1bn!
The plot synopsis goes like this:
Captain Jack Sparrow is pursued by an old enemy, Captain Salazar, who along with his crew of ghost pirates has escaped from the Devil’s Triangle, and is determined to kill every pirate at sea. Jack seeks the Trident of Poseidon, which grants its possessor total control over the seas to use against Salazar.
We’ll see the return of a lot of familiar faces — the likes of Johnny Depp as the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow, and everyone’s favourite bad-guy-turned-good-(mostly) Barbossa, played by Geoffrey Rush. Orlando Bloom’s back as the dreamboat Will Turner, though last we saw him he was captaining the Flying Dutchman, so he’s going to be a much more powerful player than he has been in previous films!
Although there’s no sign of his Pirate King wife Elizabeth, Brenton Thwaites plays Henry Turner, “A young man who tries to reconnect with his father. He struggles to break a curse that is preventing him from doing so.” History repeating itself with the Turner boys, by the looks of it!
We’re also going to be treated to some brilliant new faces — Captain Salazar, out for revenge against his “former nemesis” Captain Jack Sparrow, will be played by none other than Javier Bardem (Skyfall, No Country For Old Men)!
Kaya Scodelario also joins the cast as Caryn Smith, an astronomer. She explained the character’s motivations to Digital Spy: “she is an academic, she’s fighting for the right to study at university, because women couldn’t at that time. So she’s on her own journey – looking for the trident of Poseidon – and she has a diary with clues.” Scodelario proved her salt in The Maze Runner, but let’s see how she takes to the sea!
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will be out May 26th 2017.
