On top of a new sneak peek at Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and an utterly bone-chilling Gotham fall finale, we were gifted with a first look at Gotham’s newest in it’s long line of classic Batman villains: Mr Freeze!
This half of the season ended with Jim Gordon choosing the path of definitely-not-law-abiding righteousness by shooting Theo Galavan! But, of course, there is no shortage of villains to take his place!
Robin Lord Taylor is still going strong as the hobbling crime lord Penguin, who’s not only teamed up with Ed Nigma, but also found a particularly surprising new umbrella stand, am I right?!
Mr Freeze is the new big bad that will be taking over from Galavan in the second half of this season, played by Nathan Darrow (House of Cards).
The ice cold super villain is otherwise known as Victor Fries, and you probably remember Arnold Schwarzenegger’s pun loving version of him from 1997’s Batman and Robin … thankfully Gotham’s version seems a bit less ridiculous!
Fox’s character description goes like this:
“Though ferociously smart and eminently capable in his work as one of Gotham’s preeminent cryogenics engineers, Victor struggles to make meaningful connections with others. The one exception is his wife, Nora (Kristen Hager), who has tragically fallen ill with a terminal disease. Victor’s love for Nora knows no bounds, so as her condition worsens, he goes to extreme measures to figure out a way to freeze her before she dies. This harrowing journey leads to his transformation into the legendary DC villain, Mr. Freeze.”
Darrow recently spoke to USA Today, saying “Victor has one central intimate human connection, and that’s with his wife. There’s something really, really interesting and vulnerable and difficult about that.
“He’s pretty focused on what he’s doing. He is on a very special, independent project. I feel like he does go to work each day, but I think he gets time to work from home and it feels like his bosses are OK with that because he’s specially talented and he’s working on something that could be potentially of great value for who he works for. So he’s pretty much involved in this pursuit and it’s rather solitary, as you might imagine.”
Executive producer John Stephens told TVLine “we’re going to be telling a heavy Freeze story in Episodes 12 and 13,” so as soon as the show’s back, on February 29th, for the second half of the season!
