Supergirl has had a huge week for its premiere, and hopefully it will continue to grow!

One of the more interesting twists presented this season is that Kara’s Big Bad is going to be her mother’s twin sister, Astra. I can only imagine how difficult it will be for the hero to fight a villain that has her mother’s face, especially when it seems like Kara and her mother had a deep bond in the pilot.

Laura Benanti, who plays Alura and Astra, talked to TVLine recently about pulling double duty and embracing her villainous side.

Since Astra is such a huge unknown, the natural start was a plea for more information about the character.

Benanti said: “I never know how much I’m allowed to say, because she’s a pretty complicated and layered character. What I can tell you right now is that she is Alura Zor-El’s twin sister, who was obviously sent to Fort Rozz by her sister. I can’t tell you why and I can’t tell you what she’s been sent to Earth to do, but I can tell you that I punch a lot of people in the face.”

I don’t know why, but the punching people in the face part of the answer made me giggle.

It certainly sounds like they will be tackling the “good twin, evil twin” plot, but in a different way. I do have to wonder what the circumstances were that Alura had to be the one to lock up Astra.

In order to the baddest bad in town, Benanti had to undergo fight training and her theatre background was more of a hindrance than a help.

Benanti said: “Like, two days before the fight scene the fight choreographers were working with me, they had me flying and landing — and they kept saying, “A little less like Peter Pan and a little bit more like you’re scary.” The same thing with my punches — “You’re not dancing, you’re punching somebody.” So, yeah, it took me a while to sort of get into the grittiness of it, but it ended up being really fun and looking really cool.”

Astra definitely sounds like she’s going to make an impression when she appears to face off against her niece tonight. Like a huge, punch in the face kind of impression.

You can see Benanti be a badass tonight on Supergirl‘s regular slot 8pm ET.
