When I was a kid, and I’m about to show my age here, I used to love watching the Lee Majors show The Six Million Dollar Man.
The show was about a military officer, Steve Austin, who becomes part of a top secret government program after a horrific accident leaves him near death after losing his two legs, his right arm and left eye . With the help of cutting edge technology, Steve is brought back to life with extraordinary abilities, making him the world’s first truly bionic man. He is now able to to run super fast, he has super strength and can see far distances.
Now Dimension Films is bringing the story to the big screen starring Mark Wahlberg as Steve Austin.
While no other casting has been announced on the still officially “in development” project, the film has scheduled a release date of December 22nd, 2017. It is to be directed by Damián Szifron, who brought us the successful Wild Tales. He has replaced Peter Berg on the project. Szifron also wrote the screenplay.
At this point, production is scheduled to start in September 2016 with Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Bob Weinstein producing.
Mark Wahlberg told Variety “I’m thrilled to assemble The Six Billion Dollar Man for the big screen with the likes of Bob Weinstein and Damián Szifron, (and) we look forward to creating a Steve Austin for the 21st century.”
Szifron said “Writing the screenplay was such a fantastic ride and embarking on this journey with Mark, Bob and Stephen to take this story to a whole new level is simply spectacular, Growing up, these kind of films left an indelible mark on me and now it feels so good to be making one.”
We will update you with more information as further casting is announced.
