Even though the Fast and Furious movies only have three more films left, beginning with the eighth film to be released in 2017, it doesn’t look like the franchise will be going anywhere any time soon.

It was announced that some spin-off movies are in development. This seems to be a growing trend in Hollywood today. We can’t seem to let anything go. Don’t get me wrong, this is one series that I’m actually interested in seeing what they do because there are so many characters that come from different and interesting backgrounds and this is their chance to be in the center of their own Fast film.

Of course, like any spin-off , this could all go very wrong.

I’ve heard plenty of times that the third film is not much of a favorite among fans, but in a way it opened doors before we knew we needed them opened. The character of Han, played by Sung Kang, turned out to be one of my favorite characters in the franchise. He didn’t even star in the first two films, but when Dom showed up to race Sean in the end, it created a need to know more about the time Han rode with him. We needed to know where Han came from even though we, unfortunately, knew where he was headed.

Now we will have a chance to see how other characters started or where they go after or even between jobs. There are so many possibilities here.

“We’ve written out story lines for various characters,” Vin Diesel told Variety. “We’ve been playing with it for a long time. It’s a very rich property and we’re committed to treating it with a lot of class.”

No specific character has been confirmed yet, but Dwayne Johnson, who plays Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs in the fifth through seventh films, has talked about the possibility of a spin-off film for his character.

Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley confirmed the talks.

“We’re certainly in conversations about how we can expand the franchise now,” she said. “It’s an ensemble cast and there’s room to bring characters in and out.”

Right now, though, the focus is going to be on the final Fast and Furious films. Although for the studio it seems like that number is a bit more flexible.

“Vin has a vision in his mind for three more, so let’s get three more done and let’s see where we are from there,” Jeff Shell, chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, said. “Everything has an end, so I don’t think our expectation is we’re going to have a hundred of them… To me Fast and Furious has become no different than a beloved series that comes on every year.”

So as of now we can expect at least three more of the main series. The beginning of the end, the eighth installment, is expected to be out April 14, 2017.
