4YE Gives Thanks: What Kelli Is Thankful For In Pop Culture

There are many thinks I am thankful for this Thanksgiving. This year has been rough, and it didn’t exactly go as planned. However, some things turned out pretty great, and all the things on this helped make my days a little brighter. The things on this list helped me get through my days, distracted me from reality, and always gave me something to do.

1. Books

I could name a handful of books that I have loved to read this year. Many of them will stick with me for a long time, but that would make this a very long list. So, I will stick with just books in general. Books have always been the one thing I could turn to when I needed a pick me up. The look, the feel, and the smell always all helped cheer me up.

Just a few months ago, I got a job at one of the local libraries. After graduating from college, I was looking for a job for over a year, trying to avoid retail. Where I live there aren’t many jobs looking for writers, especially creative writers. So I found the next best thing, working with books. This of course caused my TBR list to skyrocket, and I now check out far too many books, but I’m not complaining. Thanks to books, I’ve met some awesome people and found an awesome job.

Just because I can’t help myself, here are some of the books I have read this year:

The Divergent Series by Veronica Roth

Girl in a Band by Kim Gordon

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Sculptor by Scott McCloud

All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness

The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys by Gerard Way

2. Marvel

Since getting my job at the library, I have been able to dive deeper into my comic book obsession. It has opened up a whole new world for me,  like Captain Marvel and Ms Marvel. It makes me want to tackle even more of the comic book universe.

The most important part of Marvel for me is Jessica Jones. I devoured this show in two days and I don’t regret it for a second. It was everything I could have ever wanted from a show. I went into this show knowing nothing about Jessica Jones and now I want more. Can we have the second season already? David Tennant as Kilgrave was creepy and great, though I struggled a bit to separate him from the Doctor.

There is so much to look forward to next year in the Marvel Universe. As much as I want it all now, I am thankful for having something to look forward to in the coming year.

3. Skype / Facebook Messenger

I have a lot of reasons to be thankful for Skype. When your best friends live in other countries or on the opposite side of the country, it isn’t always possible to see them or call them up ( which is one reason why I hate time zones). In those rare moments, when we are able to coordinate our schedules, we have Skype so we can talk face to face. The quality of the video isn’t always that great, but it’s better than nothing. It’s hard not seeing them whenever I want to, and even harder when it can some times be years before we get to see each other in person. But, thanks to Skype we don’t have to go years without at least seeing each other.

Facebook messenger is one of the few things that keeps me on Facebook. There have been hours spent on Facebook talking about our lives, fangirling, sending gifs back and forth, driving each other crazy. Thanks to FB messenger we can talk anywhere and at any time.

Sometimes, I think about how reliant we have become on technology, but then I think about the way it has helped me to connect with people all over the world. I would never want to change that. I have met people I would never have met otherwise, and it is really the best thing.

There are many other things I am thankful for this year. But mostly, it comes down to those people in my life who have been there for me this year. I can’t wait to see what 2016 holds for us.

Happy Thanksgiving!
