Superheroes have successfully taken over the big screen and they won’t stop anytime soon (bless), so what’s next? Taking over TV, of course!
Remember when we used to watch cartoons with some of our favourite heroes? As much as we love cartoons, that’s kinda out these days; today is all about live-action. And we are all up for it!
Marvel has done so already with Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter, and on digital platforms with Daredevil and soon with AKA Jessica Jones, but now it’s the turn of the other Marvel children living with their foster parents: the X-Men.
FX is teaming up with Jeph Loeb (Agents of SHIELD), producers Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg, and Fargo creator Noah Hawley for a live-action Legion pilot.
Who, you might ask? Sit down, my children, this is a good one.
Legion, whose name is actually David Haller, is the son of Professor Charles Xavier and Gabrielle Haller, a Holocaust survivor. He deals with multiple personality disorder, with each of his personas controlling one of his superpowers. And man, does he have superpowers! Among them are speed, flight, X-ray vision, heat absorption, super strength, matter animation, sonic dreams, warp-reality, and many, many more. All this makes him one of the strongest mutants in existence. Of course he deserves his own series!
“Since he was a teenager, David has struggled with mental illness. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real”, reads FX’s description of the show.
Nick Grad, FX programming president, added: “Legion is just the sort of ambitious story that Noah excels at. His adaption of Fargo for television was one of the most acclaimed television events in recent memory. It’s also an honour to partner with Marvel on Legion and to enlist such an accomplished team of executive producers to create this pilot”.
That’s not all from the X-Men.
A separate Fox series based on an X-Men character is also in developing, but this time it’s all about villains (note: Legion is an antihero). Hellfire Club will be set in the 1960s, following a young special agent who comes across with a woman with supernatural abilities who happens to be working with a clandestine society of millionaires (the Hellfire Club) to take over the world.
As TVLine notes, we were introduced to some Hellfire members in X-Men: First Class, with Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon) and Emma Frost (January Jones). See? You are not that unfamiliar to the concept.
“We are thrilled to partner with Marvel to bring this world to television and build upon the vibrant mythology that has captivated fans for years. These powerful and dynamic characters are complicated and larger-than-life, the pace and visual imagination are unrelenting, and the story takes place during one of the most explosive eras in recent history. We are so looking forward to working with this incredibly talented team”, said David Madden, Fox president.
The script for Hellfire Club will be penned by Patrick McKay and JD Payne, and they will also serve as executive producers alongside Bryan Singer, Evan Katz, Manny Coto, Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory.
Honestly, we have nothing to fear with Singer and Loeb serving as producers: Singer knows the mutants perfectly, and Loeb knows how to bring heroes to TV successfully. It was about time the mutants got some TV love! (Mmm, that sounded so much better in my head).
What do you think about these new projects? Are you excited to see Legion and the villains on their own shows? Personally, I’m all about the Legion series!
