What can be more frightening than a person killing you in your dreams? There really isn’t any way to avoid it other than staying awake, which is what makes Freddy Krueger down right creepy. Oh, and the knives connected to his fingers.
A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of the first scary movies I remember watching as a kid. I loved it even back then. I’ll admit, I haven’t watched most of the movies involving Freddy Krueger, but the original Nightmare on Elm Street is one of my favorite scary movies, so I will mostly be focusing on his role in that movie.
I’ve never been one to have vivid dreams, so the idea of a dream being so real it could kill you seemed pretty ridiculous to me at the time. Also the fact that Krueger was haunting them from beyond the grave, I thought this made him creepy and appear unbeatable.
Freddy Krueger became one of my favorite slashers because he was someone you want to see lose. He didn’t let his death stop him from wrecking havoc on the families who killed him. He doesn’t hide himself behind a mask, like Ghostface from Scream and Jason from Halloween. He haunts these teenagers for revenge and because he believes he can’t be touched, especially by their parents, who helped murder him.
It is pretty impossible to even think about a bath after watching Freddy’s hand come up from the water.
A Nightmare on Elm Street was Johnny Depp’s first acting role. He also has one of the most gruesome death scenes. It is enough to make you afraid of being in your bed. The only thing I can think of during that scene is the ridiculous amount of blood that comes spewing out of the bed, which is a lot more than the human body has in it. But that is just another thing about Freddy, he can make the impossible happen. It doesn’t matter that that is too much blood, it is the fact that Freddy pulled Glen down into the bed and reduced him to fountain of blood for his parents to find.
So, there you go. How can any other slasher live up to him? Freddy Krueger isn’t even alive and kills in impossible ways. Even when Nancy believes she has beaten him, he comes back and takes care of everyone again, including Nancy. There really is nothing worse than a person acting on revenge because they won’t stop at anything until it’s achieved. Even after he has killed all the kids, we know he doesn’t stop since there are sequels to the movies.
A Nightmare on Elm Street will probably always be one of my go to movies for this time of year, and Freddy Kruger will always have a special spot in my heart.
Now don’t let him haunt your dreams.
And, remember, don’t forget your hall pass.
