Ah, James Gunn. The director of Guardians of the Galaxy is one of our favourite humans not only because of his talent and superb sense of humour, but mainly because he loves keeping in touch with his fans.
Whether it’s on Twitter, Periscope, Instagram or Facebook, James Gunn is always open to reading the fans’ questions, thank you notes, etc. He has also been quite open and honest about his creative process, his inspirations, and the main reasons why he loves doing what he does. Today, he shared an example of the latter.
James Gunn shared a story written to him on Facebook from a fan and father, who explained how Groot helped his four-year-old son who suffers from dyspraxia (which affects planning of movements and coordination).
With the caption “I love making movies because of stories like this. Thank you”, Gunn shared the following:
“Hi James…This is in response to your recent post about Guardians being released a year ago and the effect it has had on my son. My son is four years old and has a condition known as dyspraxia, which not only interferes with motor skills but speech as well. When Guardians came out Sawyer could only say about three words and would communicate to his mother and I by other means. When he saw Groot, something clicked inside him and he connected with him on a level I haven’t seen. He began to mimic him and he would use the word “Bah” for a lot, but after he saw the film, he would change the tone in which he said it to convey a different meaning. He would also start saying Groot for many things as well. Since that, he was finally able to go to a speech class and it has helped amazingly. I just wanted to thank you though, for a script and movie that was written so well that a four year old, three at that time, could connect with someone who had the same language barrier.”
This story has received a wave of positive, heart-warming comments that re-prove how amazing the Guardians of the Galaxy fandom is. But most importantly, it’s one more proof of how important this movie has been to many people (me included).
I can’t stress enough the importance of movies with characters we can identify with, especially movies that are aimed for children and adults alike. Guardians has helped many of us through different situations, whether it was by offering a healthy escape from a chaotic reality (as it did with me) or in so much deeper levels, like it did with this family.
We have a lot to thank you for, Mr. Gunn!
James is currently working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, which will start shooting next year for a May 5, 2017 release. Personally, I can’t wait to see what fun adventures and new life lessons will come with the sequel! Also, I’m looking forward to see which songs will be included in Awesome Mix Vol 2!
