Johnny Depp surprised attendees at the D23 Expo on Saturday (August 15) when he staggered on stage in full Captain Jack Sparrow costume during the Disney live action films presentation. The actor/Captain walked out to tremendous applause and fans got a sneak peek at Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
The fifth installment in the POTC franchise finds Captain Jack once again fleeing from an old nemesis, Captain Salazar played by Javier Bardem. Salazar commands a band of deadly ghost pirates that escape from the Devil’s Triangle with murder in their bones and Jack Sparrow high on their kill list. To cheat death yet again, Jack goes in search of the Trident of Poseidon. Legend has it the artifact is powerful enough to bestow its possessor with total control over the seas. Sounds like just the thing for a drunken pirate to be wielding.
Joining Depp and Bardem in Dead Men Tell No Tales are Geoffrey Rush (Captain Barbossa), Brenton Thwaites, Kevin R. McNally, Kaya Scodelario, Golshifteh Farahani, Stephen Graham, and David Wenham. In a surprise announcement, Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner was revealed to be returning to the franchise after not appearing in the fourth film.
On stage at D23, Captain Jack answered questions in his usual slurred, silly way and tossed grapes to the crowd. He also seemed about to sing a song for us all (perhaps a rousing chorus of “A Pirate’s Life for Me”?) before he was ushered off stage by Walt Disney Pictures’ president of production Sean Bailey. “I didn’t want to sing you a song anyway!” Depp called out as he exited.
Filming for Dead Men Tell No Tales completed last week in Australia but it won’t hit theaters until July 7, 2017.
