Seems like there has been some confusion around one of the villains from Star Wars: the Force Awakens.

Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver, is that guy we saw on the first trailer with that ultra epic crossguard lightsaber. Thanks to recent interviews with director JJ Abrams, we have learned a bit more about this new character.

First, he is part of a mysterious group called The Knights of Ren, hence the second part of his name (oh yeah, because, just like “Darth” was a title, “Ren” is a title too). He made the transition to the First Order, believed to be a remnant of the Empire as we knew it, and his mask is a nod to Darth Vader.

How he made the transition to the First Order is something we will hopefully see in The Force Awakens, but this in no way means that Kylo Ren is a Sith.

I repeat: Kylo Ren is not a Sith.

In an interview with Empire, JJ Abrams made this clear, sharing who Kylo Ren works for.

“Kylo Ren is not a Sith. He works under Supreme Leader Snoke, who is a powerful figure on the Dark Side of the Force”, Abrams said.

Snoke is a performance-captured digital character played by king of greatness Andy Serkis and is that gravely voice narrating the first trailer. Things are starting to take a bit more shape.

Abrams also gave some background on the state of the universe at the beginning of The Force Awakens and the origins of the First Order.

“That all came out of conversations about what would have happened if the Nazis all went to Argentina but then started working together again? What could be born of that? Could the First Order exist as a group that actually admired the Empire? Could the work of the Empire be seen as unfulfilled? And could Vader be a martyr? Could there be a need to see through what didn’t get done?”, Abrams shared.

All these small hints at what’s coming in Episode VII are only adding up to the excitement and making me more anxious to watch it. Is it December already?! No? Ok then.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be out on December 18. Be sure to get the new issue of Empire with more details on this movie, on sale tomorrow!
