Calling all 1D fans – I know you’re going through a tough time right now, but the boys have taken to Twitter with some comforting words! They’re not splitting up for good! They’re just “taking a break”! So take a deep breath, okay?

On Sunday a source told The Sun newspaper that the band would be splitting in March for a year, and that they won’t be going on tour following their fifth studio album.

“The guys have been together for five years, which is an incredible run for any boyband.

“They fully deserve to have at least a year to work on their own projects. There is absolutely no bad blood between them and they are all 100 per cent behind the decision.

“It is definitely not a split and they fully intend to get back together at some time in the future.

“But for now it is the end and they go out on top as the world’s most popular music act.”

It was made clear that this decision to split had nothing to do with founding member Zayn Malik’s departure from the band earlier this year: “This was the plan with or without Zayn. In fact, the band have been making amazing music and been incredibly happy without Zayn.

“Of course they would have preferred that he had stayed in the band, but they would have taken this extended hiatus even if he hadn’t left.”

Now, although this information was pretty clear, the internet of course took this as news that One Direction would be gone for good! There have been some pretty funny (and sad) fan reactions on Twitter! Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Liam Payne have all tweeted reassurances and thanked fans for their support!

So far no word from Harry Styles, nor any reaction from Zayn (which is surprising given how vocal he’s been on Twitter lately!). We did, however, get a hilarious (and depressing) quote from ex-‘NSYNC member Joey Fatone!

Of course we’re all sad about the boys going in their own separate directions (ha) for now, but this could be a pretty exciting time! Maybe they’ll drop an album each and we’ll get five times the amount of music!
