With his highly successful run as the eponymous lead in Hedwig and the Angry Inch coming to an end on Sunday evening, it appears there will be no rest for Emmy nominated actor Darren Criss as his new project has just been announced.
The Hollywood Reporter has reported that Criss will be starring in upcoming feature film Smitten. The movie which will centre on a young fashion executive (to be played by Criss) who is taken hostage by the Italian Mafia whilst in the Italian Alps.
The feature which will be the directorial debut of Oscar winning screenwriter Barry Morrow has been described as “an enchanted fable” and “a caper centering on four romances”. Morrow who won his Oscar for the screenplay for Rain Man has also penned the script for the movie which will also star Spanish actress Angela Molina, and Romanian actress Madalina Ghenea.
According to reports, the movie will begin filming in Fane Alm, Southern Tyrol on Monday for four weeks, with filming moving to Rome for the final three weeks of the seven week shoot. This means that Criss will be heading straight from his acclaimed run as Hedwig straight to Italy to start filming.
Criss, who is best known for his role as Blaine Anderson on the Fox show Glee, was nominated for an Emmy for the song “This Time” which was featured in Glee‘s final episode “Dreams Come True”.
It is a lovely thing to see that Criss has another project lined up. One does wonder, however, when the actor will find time to decompress from what has certainly been a whirlwind twelve months.
