It’s only one week until The Disney Channel Original Movie, Descendants, makes its way to our screens. As if we needed an excuse to get excited, Disney have released the first 6 minutes of the film which introduces us to the inhabitants of the Isle of the Lost.

The basic premise is as follows; Belle and Beast’s son, Ben, is now 16 and about to succeed his dad as King of Auradon. All the notorious Disney villains are banished to the Isle of the Lost, but in his first official Royal Proclamation, Ben decides to let some of the villain’s offspring leave the island to attend school in Auradon.

Disney has rounded up many of its familiar faces, including Liv and Maddie‘s Dove Cameron as Mal, daughter of Maleficent, Cameron Boyce (Jessie) as Carlos, Son of Cruella DeVil, Booboo Stewart (Good Luck Charlie) as Jay, son of Jafar, and Sofia Carson (Austin and Ally) as Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen. Kristin Chenoweth stars as Maleficent.

These six minutes give us a fairly good taste of what to expect from the movie. Directed by High School Musical god, Kenny Ortega, Descendants is slick, with great costumes, good music and amazing dance routines. As for the acting? Well… Let’s move on.

The first track, “Wicked to the Core” is really quite good, and there is no reason to doubt, given Ortega’s pedigree, that the rest of the soundtrack and dance routines will be the same. There is no glimpse of Chenoweth’s Maleficent here, but it’s a safe bet to say that Disney are saving the greatest character unveiling until last. So far there have only been brief glimpses of her in previous trailers, but what little we have seen looks great.

Despite the possible weak acting (because let’s be fair, we haven’t seen the whole thing yet), Descendants will be a fun film for all Disney fans. It’s a great concept, and as with all Disney Channel Movies, designed not to be taken too seriously.

Descendants premieres on The Disney Channel, Friday, July 31st at 8pm.
