Star Wars and Lucasfilm have always embraced technology, utilising the latest gadgets, effects, and know-how to bring fans the best experience of the galaxy far, far away. This tradition continues with the launch yesterday (July 8) of the official Star Wars app.

Described as “your official mobile connection to a galaxy far, far away,” the app will allow fans to keep on top of breaking news, social updates, special events, as well as be immersed in a whole stack of awesome media and interactive features. These include:

  • Instant notifications on big announcements, including trailer releases and movie news
  • The ability to theme your app with Light Side, Dark Side, or Droid interfaces, each containing different designs, sounds, and animations
  • Opportunities to take and share a Star Wars “selfie” in various iconic costumes and settings, including Jedi, Princess Leia (with hair buns), Han Solo’s carbon freeze, and more
  • Star Wars-themed weather and five-day forecasts, featuring original art and parallax effects of in-universe planets and locales
  • Wielding a lightsaber and hone your skills against a training remote, as seen in Star Wars: A New Hope
  • Playing classic sound clips and sound effects from your favorite Star Wars characters, creatures, weapons, vehicles, and scenes
  • A handy count down to major releases like Star Wars: The Force Awakens with an always-running timer.

And that is just a brief run-down! Plus, remember “always in motion is the future,” so, fittingly, the app will “continue to grow, evolve, and become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.” Sounds like a must-have for any Star Wars fan especially with everything coming out from the franchise over the next few years. You don’t want to be left behind.

Check out the trailer for the app and if you’re not running to download it before the 43 second trailer is finished, can you really call yourself a fan? (Well unless you’re not from the US, as it appears to currently only be available there – it certainly isn’t in Australia).

The Star Wars app is available to download for free now on iPhone and Android.
