As we are drawing to the end of the summer blockbuster releases, our attention is shifting to the other big movies coming to cinemas later this year. One of the most highly anticipated is the final installment in the Hunger Games franchise: Mockingjay – Part 2.
If there is one thing we’ve learnt from the release of the previous three films, it is that Lionsgate know how to market these movies. In an operation that is comparable to the highly controlled Capitol propaganda, we’ve been caught, hook, line and sinker eagerly waiting for the next little piece thrown our way. I’m just glad that we generally don’t have to wait too long between teasers. In fact, the latest has just been released, a week before the full-length trailer becomes live.
Featuring our heroine, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and her army of freedom fighters, charging through the centre of the Capitol, the tension builds and the expectation of something epic just around the corner is obvious.
What I love most about this trailer is comparing this Katniss, full of strength, power, sure of herself and what she needs to do, with the Katniss at the beginning of Mockingjay – Part 1, solely interested in saving Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), doubting herself and her ability to lead. This is never more obvious that the teaser’s final shot – a head shot of Katniss drawing an arrow ready to let loose, but who exactly her target may be, that’s left up to the viewer.
However, it’s not all war and violence, the action of the teaser is broken up by a simple scene of Katniss walking among President Snow’s garden and coming across one of Snow’s infamous white roses. Something I would be wary about.
The new teaser follows the film’s Comic-Con panel almost a fortnight ago. As part of that presentation, another short teaser was shown. This highly stylised teaser is beautiful in its simplicity, yet deadly in its intent. This isn’t some ragtag team that the heroes have amassed, this is a full fledged army fighting for their freedom, fighting for what’s right and there’s no greater motivation than that. It’s an interesting contrast to the one released this week, presenting a more rounded picture of the final film.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 is released on November 20.
