Continuing their quest to make 2015 the best year for Doctor Who at San Diego Comic Con, Steven Moffat, Jenna Coleman, and Michelle Gomez did a panel at Nerd HQ on Saturday. The Conversation for a Cause sold out instantly even without The Doctor himself listed as attending. But Peter Capaldi never misses a chance to surprise fans or support charity. So right after host Nathan Fillion introduced the three expected guests, a thinly disguised voice sounded asking them to describe how wonderful Capaldi is to work with. And so, as his costars and executive producer laughed, the man himself walked on stage to deafening applause and cheers.
As is often the case at Nerd HQ, the intimate yet relaxed setting allows panelists to let loose in their answers. Feeding off the energy in the room and his own enduring joy at his job, Capaldi acted out his first experience using the sonic screwdriver. Apparently the prop they use is heavy, sharp, and doesn’t make any of the cool sounds we all love. Moffat even joked that the toy sonic screwdrivers are much better made than their on set props because the manufacturers have a bigger budget than the props department.
The EP seems to have enjoyed himself just as much as his actors this year at Comic Con. He was quick to compliment the BBC for their extremely strong support of Doctor Who and to praise his actors for their poignant portrayals of sometimes difficult characters. Perhaps he realizes, as we do, that these actors are often embodying their characters. Gomez seems to know this and plays to it, answering the question about what song she would lip sync to by saying, “Hey Missy you’re so fine you’re so fine you blow my mind?”
After making everyone, including The Doctor, blush with her sweet praise of Capaldi as a costar during the Doctor Who panel in Hall H, Coleman had the tables turned on her at Nerd HQ. Speaking about The Doctor’s companion, Capaldi said, “In the form of Jenna, she’s brought me immense comfort and happiness. She’s such a class act, she’s a star!” She got in her own tribute anyway though when asked to describe The Doctor. “He is a hero with two hearts.” Not missing a beat, Capaldi added, “Double the love!”
