Early last week the call went out that the producers of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them were going to host an open casting call for the character of Modesty.
Looking for a young actor between the ages of 10 and 12, Modesty is described as being: “a haunted young girl with an inner strength and stillness. She has an ability to see deep into people and understand them.” Hopefuls were to rock up to London’s ExCel Centre Hall this past Saturday, and came they certainly did. In droves.
According to reports from ITV News, more than 20,000 hopefuls turned out with dreams of Potter stardom similar to that of Emma Watson, though BBC estimates puts it at a more modest 10,000. Described by many as “a chance in a lifetime” and a “dream come true,” when it came down to the audition, for the some the nerves kicked in. However, no one went home empty-handed as each auditionee was presented with a certificate acknowledging their participation.
While the competition was fierce with a mixed range of talent, drive and potential, the film’s casting agents said that they would find their Modesty among the bunch. And the lucky girl will be thrown in the deep end, with filming due to start next month and continue through to January next year.
Taking place 70 years before the action in the Harry Potter novels and films, Fantastic Beasts is a prequel of sorts to the franchise. Centred around Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), a magizoologist, and his adventures in New York City, which he has traveled to in order to find and document magical creatures – the subject of his famous Hogwarts textbook.
Joining Redmayne is Katherine Waterson as the female lead, the witch Porpentina.
Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them will be released in November 2016.
