Liam Garrigan will be joining the cast of Once Upon a Time. In the upcoming fifth season, Garrigan will recur in the role of the mythical King Arthur. His previous credits include The Pillars of the Earth24: Live Another Day, and Strike Back.

King Arthur is a new addition to the Once Upon a Time universe; Camelot and Excalibur have been mentioned, and a disgraced and exiled Lancelot briefly appeared in the second season, but it looks as though we will be visiting the realm properly this time around. The news that Sinqua Walls will be returning to the role of Lancelot also helps confirm that Camelot will be a major location for the fifth season of the fairytale drama. There were also the dying words of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice in the season four finale, revealing that the mysterious and as yet unseen Sorcerer was none other than Merlin…

After four seasons of passing references, it will be nice to explore Camelot and see the unique Once Upon a Time twist on the familiar story of magic, kingdoms, and forbidden love. In fact, with all the prophecies, dragons, kings, sorcerers, and love stories, the tragedy of Camelot seems like a natural fit for the world of Once Upon a Time. After what many felt was an uneven and disappointing fourth season, a season that some complained was dragged down by too many modern Disney references, a return to more traditional fairytales may be just the shot in the arm that the series needs. Let’s hope that Merlin and company, in addition to (hopefully) saving Emma Swan from being consumed by the Dark One, might also work a little magic for the show.

Once Upon a Time’s fifth season will premiere on Sunday, September 27th on ABC.
