The Big Lebowski is, to put it frankly, an amazing movie. I saw it my freshman year of college. It changed my life and how I thought about comedy, storytelling, and everything.
Not only is it considered one of the greatest cult films of all times: it also created several conventions based around the movie, named two spiders, and founded a religion.
I am dead serious here. It’s called “Dudeism” and was founded in 2005.
On top of that, it’s just a really excellent comedy with brilliant performances from a cast that includes Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Tara Reid, and Julianne Moore. I still crack up laughing every time I watch it.
I’m getting off topic. For our Canadian readers, the Just For Laughs comedy festival is coming up in Montreal. On July 24th, Jason Reitman (Juno) has a table read of the famous film scheduled, and it promises to be interesting.
Michael Fassbender is going to be reading the role of The Dude.
Look I love Michael Fassbender as much as the next person, but he’s not known for his comedic roles.
That isn’t to say that dramatic actors can’t be funny or comedic actors can’t be dramatic. It’s just a little shock to the system when you see such things is all.
I have no idea how this will go, and apparently, that’s why Reitman cast him.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director said: “Unlike other live reads where I have a decent sense of how, for instance, Seth Rogen [was] going to play The Dude, I have no idea how Fassbender will do it. But he’s one of our greatest performers, he’s on the current Mount Rushmore of actors, so I can’t wait to see what he comes up with.”
Well considered me interested. I can’t wait to see how Michael Fassbender will bring such a classic character as The Dude alive for a night in a table read.
Joining him, in a stroke of excellent casting, is Patton Oswald as Walter Sobchak (played by John Goodman in the original film). The other roles have yet to be announced for the Just For Laughs table read.
The read will take place July 24th in Montreal (where Fassbender is filming X-Men: Apocalypse).
