Ever since the news broke that Sony had given Marvel Studios access to Spider-Man the buzz around the web slinger has been at an all time high because it meant that good ol’ Spidey would probably be making an appearance or two with earth’s mightiest heroes (aka the Avengers).
The deal also meant that we were getting a new actor to portray Spider-Man. This is where everyone got excited and were making tons of predictions. We here at 4YE even made our own list of potential actors who would be great in the role.
Well, finally after a lot of talk and rumours, Marvel Studios has announced their new Peter Parker: Tom Holland.
The official announcement made by Marvel said: “The studios and producers were impressed by Holland’s performances in The Impossible, Wolf Hall, and the upcoming In the Heart of the Sea, and by a series of complex screen tests.”
A statement made by Amy Pascal, a producer for the Spider-Man film said, “Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world. With [Holland], we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
Tom Rothman, the Group Chairman at Sony Pictures Motion Pictures, added: “For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start.”
On top of the new Spider-Man casting, it was announced that Jon Watts will be directing the new film which is slated to be released on July 28, 2017.
“The Marvel process is very thorough, and that’s why their results are so outstanding. I’m confident Spider-Man will be no exception. I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent,” Rothman said.
Kevin Feige, another producer on the film, said, “As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life. We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring.”
Having been a fan of the MCU for quite some time now it is safe to say that they definitely do their research when it comes to these things, so it will be great to see what Watts and Holland bring to the big screen.
The new, currently untitled, Spider-Man film will hit theatres in 2017 but who knows…maybe we’ll see him a little sooner than that (cough Civil War cough).
