Disney’s Descendants has been a long time coming. In fact, we first reported on it in May 2014, when we found out that Kristin Chenoweth was joining the cast as the evil Maleficent.  Since then we’ve had various set photos, a few teasers and most recently the official trailer.

Now, finally, a release date has been set for the TV movie, which will premiere on the Disney Channel. The film will air at 8pm ET, July 31, telling the story of the offspring of famous Disney villains.

Maleficent’s daughter, Mal, will be played by Dove Cameron. Cruella DeVil’s son, Carlos, is played by Cameron Boyce, the Evil Queen’s daughter, Evie, is brought to life by Sofia Carson and Jafar’s son, Jay, is portrayed by Booboo Stewart. The film sees the four banished to the isle of misfits, until the new, young king (Belle and Beast’s son), takes pity on them and orders that they be schooled in the main kingdom.

Of course, things don’t go smoothly and the villainous offspring must decide if they are really evil to the core, or if they can control their own fate by becoming good.

Descendants is the brain child of Kenny Ortega, who also brought us the blindingly brilliant High School Musical. Descendants looks set to be following a similar pattern, with plenty of highly choreographed song and dance numbers, and a little bit of high school romance thrown in for good measure.

There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, and no doubt this film will be the movie of the summer for the tween generation. The previous trailer didn’t exactly enthral me, but the new, extended version which you can watch over on EW, has a much better feel to it. It looks as slick as one might expect and though some of the acting seems a little wooden, there is something very compelling about seeing Chenoweth in all her evil glory.
