“You know we belong together,
You and I forever and ever.
No matter where you are,
You’re my guiding star.”
He may have wowed audiences worldwide with his portrayal of the Norse God of thunder, or Snow White’s Huntsman, or English Formula 1 racer James Hunt, but for many of us, Chris Hemsworth will always be Kim Hyde from the idyllic Australian beach town Summer Bay.
Appearing in the Australian soap Home and Away from 2004 to 2007, the then 19-year-old shot to fame playing the wide-eyed high school student/lifesaver worming his way into not only the hearts of many of the Bay’s beauties, but also the nation’s. The role earned Hemsworth the Logie Award for Most Popular New Male Talent at the 2005 awards show.
While he has since gone on to star in some of Hollywood’s biggest hits in more recent years, the two Thor films, the two Avengers films, Snow White and the Huntsman and Rush, Hemsworth hasn’t forgotten what gave him his start in the business.
In a recent visit back home, Hemsworth found time to drop in on his old stomping grounds, even sparing some time for a special cameo in an upcoming episode (I presume he generously waved his usual appearance fees!). In the May 19th episode of the soap (airing in Australia tonight), Hemsworth can be seen in that all-important social congregating hub, The Diner. As current stars Hannah (Cassie Howarth), Denny (Jess Grace Smith) and Phoebe (Isabella Giovinazzo) discuss that latest Bay gossip, Hemsworth is in the background tucking into his lunch, just minding his own business.
Now the really big question is how did his reappearance escape the notice of town know-it-alls Irene (Lynne McGregor) and Marilyn (Emily Symonds)?
Though often ridiculed here in Australia, Hemsworth has often spoken fondly of his time on the soap, saying, “I loved Home and Away and I credit everything I do to it. I was 19 when I started working on that show. I had such a great time.”
The Hemsworth cameo episode of Home and Away with air in the UK later this year.
