Move over Ursula, Scar, Shere Khan et al because there are new villains in town.

Disney has premiered the first trailer for its upcoming Disney Channel Original movie, Descendants. The film focuses on the offspring of some of Disney’s deadliest villains as they move from the Isle of the Lost (basically where all the villains live) to attend school in the kingdom run by the son of Belle and the Beast.

Maleficent’s daughter, Mal (Dove Cameron), Cruella De Vil’s son, Carlos (Cameron Boyce), the Evil Queen’s daughter, Evvie (Sofia Carson), and Jafar’s son, Jay (Booboo Stewart) must all try and fit in with the nicer kids and from the looks of the trailer, it’s not going to be all that easy.

Directed and choreographed by Kenny Ortega (the God of High School Musical), Descendants should be blindingly brilliant, but I’ll be honest, I felt a little let down by the trailer. That’s not to say it won’t work; after all it is aimed at a younger audience than I, but it all felt a little wishy-washy and not very villainous at all.

Cameron and Boyce are Disney Channel veterans and certainly keep me entertained in their starring roles on Liv and Maddie and Jessie, respectively. Their performances are the ones that stand out among the four but they still seem weak in comparison with their usual star quality.

Kristin Chenoweth easily looks set to steal every scene she’s in as Maleficent and Disney seem to have made a very wise casting choice there.

The production seems great and it might just be that since the trailer is so brief, we’re not really getting a chance to see them all shine.

I really hope that’s the case. Disney is billing this, and Teen Beach Movie 2 (yay!) as their summer blockbusters, so let’s hope the movie will showcase the deliciously decadent descendants in all their glory.
