The full list of Tony nominations will be revealed tomorrow, however the first Special Tony Award recipient has been announced and it is exciting.
Mama herself, John Cameron Mitchell will be receiving a Special Tony Award at the ceremony on June 7. Mitchell both wrote the book Hedwig and the Angry Inch and also created the stage role for the off Broadway debut of the musical. The Broadway revival of the show triumphed at last year’s Tony Awards with wins for Lena Hall, and Neil Patrick Harris for his portrayal of Hedwig. Mitchell himself reprised the role at the Belasco Theatre and played his last show as Hedwig last night (April 26), ahead of Darren Criss taking over the role from Wednesday 29 April.
Speaking today, President of the American Theatre Wing Heather Hitchens, and Executive Director of The Broadway League Charlotte St. Martin said, “John’s return to Hedwig and the Angry Inch is one for the history books.” The pair went on to say, “He not only co-wrote the musical with Stephen Trask and created the role – before directing and starring in the film – but returned to Broadway to star as Hedwig this season after a series of rave performances by Neil Patrick Harris, Andrew Rannells and Michael C. Hall. This is a remarkable undertaking, and we are honored to recognize his outstanding success with this honor.”
This is a truly exciting announcement and it can’t have come at a better time following his triumphant return to a story and character which means so much to him. This seems like the perfect Broadway tribute to the actor. A hearty congratulations to Mitchell and here’s hoping he might get to give a special performance at the ceremony which is to be held at New York’s Radio City Music Hall on June 7.
The full nominations for this year’s awards will be made by Mary-Louise Parker and Bruce Willis tomorrow (Tuesday April 28), and we will of course bring you all the news when the nominations are announced.
