More Marvel Greatness! Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Could Get The Spinoff Treatment

Well, we know there are two S.H.I.E.L.D.s, but how do you like the sound of two TV shows about their agents? It seems a spinoff of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is already coming down the pipeline. EW has the exclusive scoop on the project: “[S]tory elements that are still to come on SHIELD this year will be used to lay the groundwork for the potential new series.”

The show will come from two men who are certainly familiar with the subject matter – Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Jeffrey Bell and writer Paul Zbyszewski. It is unclear who the potential spinoff would focus on, but one thing does seem ominously clear: If the spinoff series is to also focus on S.H.I.E.L.D. members, there’s a solid chance we’re going to be splitting up the team even further.

But let’s not get too ahead of ourselves, here. Without there being any official word from either ABC or Marvel, we can’t be sure this project will even get off the ground. In fact, while Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s ratings have been going up, there’s still no guarantee it will be renewed for a third season. In addition to that, it will be a while until we hear which pilots ABC chooses to bless with a series order.

If we do get this spinoff series, I’m hoping it will be focused on either Ward or the Raina and the Inhumans. The latter idea could actually be quite brilliant – a way to merge the Inhumans further with the existing MCU and lead up to the film in 2018. Now, it could just be my terrigen-colored glasses, being a major fan of the Inhumans, but I think that would rock. Unfortunately, given the schism already in place on S.H.I.E.L.D. – as well as Brett Dalton’s devoted fanbase – it seems far more likely to be a show about Ward.

Speculation aside, as in all things, in Marvel we trust. While the studio does make some questionable choices (I’m still disgruntled about the Dr. Strange casting choice), it can’t be denied that they produce some quality entertainment. So I’ll reserve my judgement until we learn more about this potential spinoff.

And in the meantime, be sure to tune in for the final six episodes of this season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.! Next week’s episode, entitled “Melinda,” is sure to be another knock-out episode. It will focus on Agent May, and we might just finally learn exactly how she became The Cavalry! You don’t want to miss this one, so remember to tune in on Tuesday at 9 PM, only on ABC.
