We’ll be his guest any time he chooses; Ewan McGregor has joined the cast of Disney’s live action Beauty and the Beast as flirty French candlestick Lumiere.

McGregor joins what could well be one of the best ensemble casts to exist since the Marvel Cinematic Universe was formed. It seems as though Disney (who own Marvel) are becoming the leaders in nabbing top quality stars for their films.

The confirmed Beauty and the Beast lineup is as follows: Emma Watson as Belle, Dan Stevens as The Beast, Luke Evans as Gaston, Josh Gad as LeFou, Emma Thompson as Mrs Potts, Sir Ian McKellan as Cogsworth, Kevin Kline as Maurice, Audra McDonald as the Wardrobe, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Fifi the feather duster and now, finally, McGregor as Lumiere. Wow.

McGregor has proved his film musical worth before, in Moulin Rouge, but the singing in Beauty and the Beast will likely be a lot more demanding. Lumiere, let us not forget, sings the classic “Be Our Guest,” and there are also new songs being written for the live action film by Alan Menken and Tim Rice.

While I love McGregor, and am a huge fan of his work, I am a little dubious about this casting. I’m simply not sure if he can quite come up to par for a role as great as this… BUT, I will happily be proven wrong, and indeed, I hope I am. One thing I will say is that McGregor has definitely got the bright smile needed for the part!

It will be a very different role for him and I think that could well work in his favour, as it did for Moulin Rouge. As an actor, he will have a desire to pull out all the stops and show the public he can do this, and again, I am hopeful that we will all be blown away.

The casting lineup is impressive, to say the very least, and I am eagerly anticipating the first glimpse we get of filming, the first teaser trailers and of course, the movie itself.
