Ever since Hannibal season two left us Fannibals crying in a pool of our own emotional blood (rather like a certain Will Graham, except his blood was literal), we have been eagerly anticipating the third season. Months passed and details about the developing third season leaked out bit by agonizing bit, and now we’re less than two months away from the premiere. It’s too early to get completely stoked and too late to not be excited… in other words, it’s the perfect time to stave off Hannibal-induced insanity by making a season three wishlist. Let’s count up our most highly anticipated and heavily hoped for moments in Hannibal season three.
Wish #1: Cat and Mouse
Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) circled Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) through season two, moving in for the kill – or at least that’s how it began. By the end, Will was as confused about his true feelings for Hannibal as the audience was, and his indecision earned him a knife in the gut by season’s end. The feathered stag that has haunted Will through two seasons finally breathed its last as Will lost consciousness, and an era full of the possibilities of friendship (or more?) died with it.
And now Will is gunning for Hannibal.
The show will track the manhunt for Hannibal, with Will no doubt leading the way. And if there’s one thing I love, it’s emotionally loaded manhunts. Bring it on.
Wish #2: Will/Hannibal Reunion
The epic manhunt can only end one way: with Hannibal behind bars. The inevitable thing about prequel series is that we always know the endgame, but shows as good as Hannibal make the journey such a fantastic ride that it doesn’t matter. I haven’t got a clue when or how Will and Hannibal will meet again, but I’m not concerned. After two seasons of stellar writing and beautiful acting combining to create one of the most memorable relationships in recent TV history, I know it will be spectacular. Sparks… and possibly blood… will fly.
Wish #3: Hannibal… With a Twist
Since unfortunate rights issues have prevented the appearance of Clarice Starling, the FBI agent linked to Lecter in the novels and movies The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal, some of her story points have been passed to other characters. The character Miriam Lass was something of a Starling homage, and Will functioned a little like Clarice when he became an object of fixation for Hannibal. The third season seems set to up the stakes even more, bringing Will into a version of the hunt for Lecter story from the novel Hannibal, in which Clarice hunted the serial killer after his escape in The Silence of the Lambs. Will Graham will now take on this role, which makes me wonder how much of the novel will be followed in this third season.
Mason Verger, another key player in Hannibal the novel, was introduced just last season and his vengeance-inducing facial mutilation occurred as well. Mason is a loaded gun pointed straight at Hannibal and a confrontation is inevitable. Will and Hannibal might find each other forced to work together for their mutual protection just as Clarice and Hannibal did when Verger’s maniacal idea of revenge was thrust upon them.
This storyline would be fantastic with Will as the protagonist in place of Clarice, especially since he fills her narrative role quite nicely – past friendliness to Lecter with a side of romantic tension – and even ups the emotional stakes because of their past friendship, however bizarre that friendship was. Let’s hope for an anti-Verger team up!
Wish #4: Zachary Quinto Playing Dr. Du Maurier’s Problem Patient
Fannibals have been waiting since season one for a flashback to enlighten us about the dark and sinister events surrounding Dr. Du Maurier’s patient who attacked her and then mysteriously died. When Zachary Quinto was cast as a patient of Dr. Du Maurier’s (who is now retired from practice), all I could think was at last. I want this casting so badly and this flashback so badly. Fingers crossed for an amazing, horrifying, revealing story.
Wish #5: Development of Dr. Du Maurier
Gillian Anderson’s Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier has been a glacial presence on Hannibal from her first appearance. Hairline fractures occasionally cracked that icy exterior, but we’ve never really seen what lies beneath the facade. It was a shock when Bedelia was revealed as Hannibal’s partner-in-running-away-from-the-crime as they sipped champagne aboard a jet bound for Europe… but what do we really know about her? The simple answer is nothing. But with Gillian Anderson’s status as a regular, Bedelia’s status as Hannibal’s buddy on the lam, and heavy-hitter Zachary Quinto joining the cast as an old patient, I’d say we’re about to find out what lies beneath. I’m excited.
Wish #6: Hannibal Behind Bars
My anticipation is intense. With the enormous season one reversal of having Will end up locked in the institution for the criminally insane, Hannibal demonstrated that just because we thought we knew how the story went didn’t mean they couldn’t surprise us. But now that we know a version of the Red Dragon story is coming, Hannibal’s days of gourmet dinners, operas, and the odd bit of murder are over – it’s time for the prison story. Hannibal Lecter in prison is one of the iconic villains of the past thirty years. His stone cold and implacable evil was enough to captivate and frighten audiences of both the novel and the movie, and his master manipulations were terrifying. I can’t wait to see how the show handles this side of the story, especially with the deepened past between Will and Hannibal – a major deviation from the novel.
Wish #7: The Great Red Dragon
Red Dragon is a terrifying book. It’s tragic, brutal, horrifying, and absolutely captivating, just like the rest of Thomas Harris’ Lecter novels. An adaptation of Red Dragon in the surreal and nightmarish style of the TV show Hannibal will be fantastic – and frightening. The delusions and visions of Francis Dolarhyde, AKA the Red Dragon killer, will be an amazing addition to a show whose abstract visuals are already one of the strongest elements of its storytelling. Add to that the fact that Dolarhyde will be played by Richard Armitage, angst master and fangirl heartthrob supreme, and it’s almost irresistible. I can’t wait.
Wish #8: That This Wait Was Over Already
Seriously, is it June yet?
All my dearest wishes aside, I have no doubt that it’s going to be a fantastic season. Of course, if I had one final wish, it would be that this season would end on a slightly more upbeat note. Literal bloodbaths followed by yearlong hiatuses are a little hard to stomach. Let’s put it this way – Will wasn’t the only one gutted by Hannibal last year.
