To say I was excited for this is an understatement.
I’d bought my ticket last year, so ever since then I had been waiting in anticipation, planning my outfit, and counting down the days until I would be a VIP member at the biggest drag show in the UK.
We had our meet and greet before the show, which was a nice change (I’m used to having to have pictures taken once you’re all sweaty after a show). The only slight annoyance was that we were supposed to go in at 6.30pm, but they didn’t open the doors until after 7pm. This meant we were left out in the cold for over half an hour (and yes, I ended up with a cold afterwards).
I was a bit nervous, but I’d met Adore and Michelle before. I knew that the queens are always so welcoming so there’d be nothing to worry about. All VIP ticket holders were taken into one big room where each queen was dotted around, and then you just formed a bit of a queue to go and have a quick chat and have your picture taken.
First up, we went to see Adore Delano. I was so excited because last time I met her we had such a laugh. She’s one of my favourites so it’s always great to get to see her again. Adore gave me a big hug and said that she’d shipped home the t shirt I’d bought her last time (because Adore loves pizza, the t shirt said “I wanna picture of pizza dat ass – I wanna pizza dat ass). She said that she now wants to get one that says “Break another little pizza my heart now baby.” I told her that was definitely a new song she could cover. She was wearing a dress for meet and greet ,which is actually quite unusual for Adore (normally opting for her denim shorts). I said how it was nice to see her in a dress for a change, to which she made me laugh by saying that it made her look like the love child of Bianca Del Rio and Lady Bunny. To be honest, she did have a point. We took a picture of me kissing her cheek. We then had a laugh about how she was impressed I was wearing matte lipstick because it meant she didn’t have lipstick all over her face.
When we were queuing up to see Adore, we could see Alaska from where we were standing. My brother was fangirling over how beautiful she looked (she’s his favourite). She was the second queen we went over to get pictures with and I was completely blown away at how lovely and easy to talk to she was. Don’t get me wrong, I already loved Alaska (along with Detox she is my favourite from season five). For some reason, however, I just wasn’t quite sure what to expect from her. Straight away she greeted me with her usual “Hieeeeeeeee” (which was adorable) and then gave me two big air kisses. She looked absolutely stunning, showing off her tiny figure in a black bra and high waisted skirt. I told her she looked gorgeous to which she replied “No YOU’RE gorgeous!” Being called gorgeous by Alaska was definitely a highlight of the night. We spoke about how I’ll be seeing her perform with the AAA Girls (made up of Alaska, Courtney, and Willam) on my birthday, which I’m really excited about. She also signed my brother’s Alaska phone case that I’d got him for Christmas. She showed off her gloves with fake nails attached because as she says, “If you’re not wearing nails, you are not doing drag.”
I was so eager to get to Manila. She’s one of my absolute favourite queens, but I’d never had the opportunity to meet her before. This was like all of my Christmases coming at once! She was wearing a long black wig with her signature banana dress, which I was so happy about because I adore that dress on her. I am definitely a fan of her more “fishy” looks. She gave me the biggest hug, which I didn’t want to end (yes I know I sound like a crazy fangirl).I probably said “oh my god I love you!” as soon as I saw her, but it was all good. She looked me up and down and told me how gorgeous I looked and that she loved my outfit. I told her how happy I was that she was wearing the outfit she was wearing too. She made sure we were stood right in a spotlight to take pictures and complimented me on the necklace I was wearing. When I told her it was a Laganja Estranja one she made me laugh by asking if I’d stolen it from her.
Seeing Michelle Visage again since her stint on Celebrity Big Brother was lovely. I’d met her last year, although I didn’t have too long to speak to her the first time. This time I was able to pass on a present that a friend had made her which she was so so grateful for. We spoke about how I’ll also be hopefully seeing her on my birthday too which she was really excited about.
The last queen we saw was Sharon Needles, another queen who I’d been desperate to meet. I was so glad that I managed to meet her because a lot of fans have had mixed views after meeting her. I think because of the “character” of Sharon, a lot of people misjudge her. Maybe, a bit like Bianca, they mistake her comedy for rudeness. I thought her telling a random girl that she looked like Jinkx Monsoon out of drag was absolutely hilarious. A fan had drawn her a picture of herself with her cat. Sharon was so touched by it that she started crying and had to leave the room for a moment. It was really sweet to see that side of her, as well as how funny she is which had me in fits of laughter.
Since we were let in late, the timing was messed up and before we’d even gotten a picture with Sharon there were security telling her that she had to leave now to go and get ready for the show. We were so so lucky that she’d taken a liking to my brother whilst we were waiting because she picked him out to have her last picture with, which meant we were pulled to the front and both managed to get a picture with her. The people in front of us probably weren’t too impressed, and I’m glad that the other queens that we didn’t have time to see were the ones left that we weren’t bothered about, because once we’d had our picture with Sharon, security started pulling all of the queens away and announcing that the show was about to start. I wouldn’t have been happy if I’d have paid VIP prices and not been able to meet all of my favourites, thankfully we were extremely lucky that day so I was very happy.
Keep your eyes peeled on 4YE next to read my review on the Battle Of The Seasons show itself, which was one not to be missed.
