One Direction band member Zayn Malik has the left the group’s tour in the middle of their Asian leg – and there’s no news of when he is likely to return.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Simon Jones, who works for Hackford PR as 1D’s publicist, tweeted “Zayn has been signed off with stress and is flying back to the UK to recuperate. The band wish him well and will continue with their performances in Manila and Jakarta”. A statement released from their record label, Simon Cowell’s Syco Records repeated Jones’ words.

People have been saying for a while (and I’ve been thinking it) that the 1D lads; Zayn, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, and Liam Payne have been burning the candle at both ends. The lads first found fame on The X Factor in 2010, at the tender ages of 16, 17 and 18, and it’s been non-stop since then.
They have a punishing work schedule which would be difficult for a seasoned band twice their age to keep up, let alone a few lads barely into their twenties who were catapulted to worldwide fame pretty much instantly.
Last year, One Direction completed a 71-date, seven-month, worldwide stadium tour; which was the biggest selling of the year, as well as releasing (and promoting) their fourth album in four years, conveniently named Four.
This year, as well as the On The Road Again tour, which started in February and ends in October, the lads will be working on their fifth album. If it’s anything like Four, they’ll be recording it in between tour stops. As well as this “day job” work, One Direction fit in television appearances and charitable gigs such as Band Aid 30 and Children In Need. To say they’re busy is an understatement, they must be exhausted.
However, they do seem to be coping remarkably well with their sudden launch into worldwide fame, except for Zayn; who has definitely been feeling the pressure lately. He had to miss the band’s Four release date performance last November in Orlando because he missed his flight or was unwell, depending on who was speaking. As reported in the Orlando Sentinel, Liam told NBC that Zayn was “just at home. He needs to rest”. When Zayn missed a Today show recording the same day Liam was quoted as saying he had “a stomach bug”.
Zayn had to leave the concert in Perth, Australia on February 20 because he wasn’t feeling well, although he was 17 songs into the concert, bless him. However, he did perform in the following nine concerts in Japan, Singapore and Thailand before pulling out before the March 21 performance in the Philippines (the other four lads tweeted before the concert, but none of them mentioned Zayn).
There have been break-up rumours swirling around One Direction for years, as with any band, but Zayn’s departure has many fans wondering if he’s up to re-joining the tour, or the band altogether. As Liam famously said in Orlando, “we introduced ourselves as Liam, Niall, Harry and Louis because we aren’t One Direction without Zayn”. It looks like they’d be lost without him.
So, where does this leave Zayn, the band, and the rest of the tour? Despite the gossip otherwise, the group has shown nothing but an extremely close friendship to one another, and we’re all hoping that Zayn is well enough to re-join the tour in time for the African leg next week, although that might be pushing it a bit.
The most important thing is Zayn’s health, obviously, and perhaps this is a sign that One Direction needs several months off, at least, once their obligations this year are over. They have more than earned it over the last five years. Their adoring fans would understand, believe me.
