The current status of the Star Wars fandom is “eagerly awaiting the release date of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” With good reason: we haven’t had a Star Wars movie since Revenge of the Sith in 2005 and that first teaser looks incredible.
Honestly, I have no doubt of the quality JJ Abrams will deliver with Episode VII. You can imagine my surprise that he is not going to be in charge of Episode VIII. Instead, writer and director Rian Johson (Looper) will take the lead.
Fear not, my fellow Abrams fans; we still have a third new Star Wars movie on the way and chances are Abrams is coming back to the director’s chair for it.
Latino Review reports Disney is quite pleased with what Abrams did with The Force Awakens and may want him back for the third movie. Although there have been rumours that Abrams and Disney were having “creative disagreements”, his name is reportedly on top of the list to direct Episode IX.
Setting my love and admiration for JJ Abrams aside, I don’t see why Disney would let him go just like that; the man knows his business in science fiction quite well. To be perfectly honest, when the news broke about Disney buying LucasFilm, a huge part of the fandom went wild in the not-cool way, but having Abrams on board brought a lot of faith to our geeky hearts.
Come on, Disney. Don’t let us down and let him direct Episode IX! Who better to make it happen than the man who brought the franchise back to life?
We must not forget, however, that this is still under the “rumour” category. I am not losing hope on it becoming a real thing. I just want JJ Abrams’ genius on everything I can!
Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be released on December 18th, while Episode VIII will see the light on May 26, 2017. Also, the spin-off titled Star Wars: Rogue One, with Felicity Jones on the lead, will be released on December 16, 2016.
