Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical Cats has had a triumphant return to London’s West End, with Nicole Scherzinger playing the role of Grizabella, and the Lord himself is hoping for more success; this time on the Great White Way.

In an interview with Event magazine, Lord Lloyd Webber said that following the success at the London Palladium, the show which is based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats will “definitely go to Broadway again”. Lloyd Webber is also hoping that Scherzinger will also make the move to New York, saying in the same interview; “I would very greatly hope she would do it. To do something like that in America would open up a billion doors for her.”

Scherzinger is in the West End cast until February 7, when she will be replaced by Wicked and We Will Rock You star Kerry Ellis, with booking now extending to April 25 which is a two month extension on the original run.

There is no doubt that both Cats and Scherzinger have been well received by the West End fans since the show reopened in December. I have been lucky enough to see the new production and I can say that Scherzinger’s performance blew me away which I was not expecting.

Cats has not been on Broadway since 2000 when it closed after a 28 year run, and with the success of revivals such as Hedwig and the Angry Inch it would be really nice to see such an iconic show return to Broadway, and let a whole new generation of theatre goers fall in love with the amazing characters. However, should the move to Broadway be confirmed I would personally love it if they don’t make the same changes to Run Tum Tugger as they have on the West End.
