There is some big news today for Fannibals and Tolkien fans alike! NBC’s Hannibal has finally cast its Frances Dolarhyde…and it’s Thorin Oakenshield himself, Richard Armitage!
Fresh off his starring in the film adaptations of The Hobbit, Armitage will take on the role previously brought to screen by Ralph Fiennes in the film Red Dragon. Frances Dolarhyde, AKA The Tooth Fairy, is an incredibly terrifying serial killer – but what else is new for Hannibal?
Armitage has signed on for a six-episode arc as the giant, tattooed killer. We have yet to see how the character will fit in with the story of the show’s third season, which is said to include events from multiple Thomas Harris books, including both Hannibal and Red Dragon. We know very little about what’s to come, but we do know they’ve been filming in Italy (which should be quite intriguing for fans of Harris’s books and Anthony Hopkins-starring films).
Much of the fandom was gunning for showrunner Bryan Fuller’s friend (and the star of his gone-too-soon show, Pushing Daisies) Lee Pace to take on the role of Dolarhyde, but so far the news of Richard Armitage taking on the role has been met with largely positive responses.
What do you think of the choice?
