News just in…. The search is over. CBS’ Supergirl has found its sharpshooting photographer, James Olsen, snapping up former Desperate Housewives star Mehcad Brooks, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Starring alongside Glee’s Melissa Benoist, in the lead role of Kara Zor-El, Brooks’ Jimmy Olsen is described as “the salt of the earth and this only makes Kara crush on him even more.” Working alongside Kara as a photographer for the media company CatCo., Olsen has recently been living and working in National City, though just what he was doing there remains shroud in secrecy. As Kara comes into her own and embraces her alter ego Supergirl, Kara and Jimmy grow closer. Here’s hoping Olsen isn’t as clueless as Kara’s cousin’s paramour, Lois Lane.
The hourlong drama will focus on Kara, who, like Superman was born on Krypton but was sent to Earth to escape its destruction. Taken in by the Danvers, her super powers begin to manifest as she gets older and the family assist in helping her control them.
Fast forward a number of years and at 24, Kara feels trapped by her abilities and the need to hide them from the world. It is only when an unexpected disaster forces her to use her powers in public does she realize just what she’s capable of and decides to start using them for good around her city. Of course, this doesn’t go unnoticed by her fellow citizens and she is quickly dubbed, Supergirl.
I have long been a fan of Superman, watching the Christopher Reeve movies repeatedly and was a devout fan of Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. However, Supergirl was never really a story that interested me – largely because her story didn’t feature much when I was growing up. I love the idea of a female-led super hero series and will be interested in seeing how Benoist interprets the role.
Jimmy was always one of my favourite characters from Superman, especially Lois and Clark’s second Jimmy, Justin Whalin, who wasn’t presented as nauseatingly eager, preppy, and naïve, as he has been in previous incarnations. I can’t imagine Brooks’ Jimmy falling back on this stereotype, and I’m looking forward to a 21st century interpretation of Jimmy.
Other Supergirl roles still to be cast include Kara’s science-minded foster sister, Alex; Cat Grant, the CEO of CatCo; CatCo colleague Wynn Schott; and Hank Henshaw, the Supergirl-obsessed director of the DEO (Department of Extra-Normal Operations). Expect announcements of these castings shortly.
The Supergirl pilot was written by The New Normal’s Ali Adler and Arrow’s Greg Berlanti – definitely in safe hands there. They will both serve as executive producers for the series along with Sarah Schechter (of Berlanti Productions) and Warner Bros. TV.
