Whatever plans you might have for this Saturday (Jan 24th), cancel them now. Amazon has announced that it is to make its hit series, Transparent, available for free for one day only to celebrate its Golden Globe triumph.
The ten episodes of Transparent are normally only available to paying Amazon Prime customers, and the show stars the fabulous Geoffrey Tambour as Maura Pfefferman, a transgender woman who must come out to her family. Not only is the show poignant and touching, it is also incredibly funny. This is transgender awareness done right. You will laugh, you will cry and most of all, you will come away having learned a lot about the transgender community and their families.
Trust me, this show is beautiful and I am so glad to see it getting the recognition it deserves. Transparent took home the prize for Best Musical or Comedy Series at the Golden Globes, while Tambor well deservingly won Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Series. The show has also been nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comedy Series and even though it is up against my all-time favourite, Glee, I would actually be thrilled if Transparent scoops the award.
Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com, said: “We’re incredibly proud of everyone involved in the making of Transparent – the team took a risk and it paid off. Big kudos and congrats to Jill [Soloway], Jeffrey [Tambor], and all the cast and crew.”
Indeed it was a big risk, and how wonderful to see a programme about a transgender woman receiving such positive praise and what is still considered rather a taboo subject being addressed in an open and honest manner.
So, come Saturday I will expect everyone to be hurriedly downloading Transparent and then you can all come back here and tell me I was right, it is totally awesome. Okay? Deal.
