Tonight at London’s O2 arena, the stars of British TV gathered for The National Television Awards. The awards which are voted for by the British public celebrate the best of British TV over the last 12 months.

Tonight’s awards, which were presented by Dermot O’Leary and televised on ITV, also paid tribute to Coronation Street star Anne Kirkbride who died on Monday evening. The actress had played Deirdre Barlow on the soap opera for over 40 years, and her on screen husband and close friend William Roache paid tribute to her at this evening’s award ceremony in a speech which certainly left me with a lump in my throat.

As well as the main categories there were a couple of special awards presented this evening. Comic Relief which has been raising money to help with projects overseas for decades now was presented with the Landmark Award.

One of our 4YE favourites David Tennant was honoured with the Special Recognition award because let’s be honest what would TV have been like in the last 10 years without this talented, humble man? Whether it has been in BlackpoolCasanova, Doctor Who, or in more recent years Broadchurch, David Tennant is a staple part of the fabric of British TV. The star looked genuinely shocked at receiving the award as can be seen from his acceptance speech below. I have to say it was a lovely touch to have The Proclaimers present him the award because Tennant makes no secret of his love for the band.

I will say that on the whole the British public voted the right way, that is the way I wanted, but saying Sheridan Smith was better than Dame Maggie Smith? I draw the line there. Yes, Sheridan was brilliant in Cilla and I adore her, but she is not Dame Maggie. Dame Maggie should win everything she is nominated for.
