If you haven’t taken the time to watch the UK series Black Mirror on Netflix, you are definitely missing out. The series is made up of hour-long episodes, each with a different plot and cast of characters. The one thing they all have in common is that they show us what could happen if we let technology go too far, and if we become too dependent on it.
The dark, gritty series takes our deepest fears about the future of technology…and mirrors them back to us.
Black Mirror has had episodes featuring many recognizable faces, including Hayley Atwell (Marvel’s Agent Carter), Jessican Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), and Tobias Menzies (Game of Thrones).
It seems this series, as well received as it is in the UK, could be getting the American remake treatment. Now, I know what you’re thinking, but hang on a second. Maybe this won’t be a bad thing.
The format of the show – which feels a lot like a series of short films – could make this an ideal TV transplant. Of course, maybe I’m just being optimistic. Either way, I’m with Charlie Corwin, co-chair of Endemol Sunshine North America, when he says the show has “really touched on something and I agree – we need more.”
Corwin confirmed that “there is a plan” for a US remake of the series, which is produced by Annabel Jones for Endemol UK. Thus far that is all that has been said of the potential for an American version, but that’s good enough for me right now. I only hope they produce more episodes in the US than they have in the UK!
As with other British series, like Sherlock, each series of Black Mirror includes only three or four (amazing) episodes.
I can’t wait to hear more about this “plan”!
