After Taylor Swift has been announced Billboard’s Woman of the Year, she is now also in the running for Time’s Person of the Year. The list of nominees has been announced during the Today show on December 8 and features the most influential people of 2014. However, Miss Swift’s competition is intimidating to say the least. Check out the full list of finalists below:
Taylor Swift – The musician has dominated the pop-industry this year with her No.1 album “1989”. She decided to pull her music from the online-streaming service Spotify after not being happy with the compensation. Many other artists followed her lead.
The Ferguson protestors – After the fatal shooting of Mike Brown, an unarmed black teenager, the white police officer Darren Wilson has not been indicted for his actions. People stood up to protest against police brutality and racial discrimination and continue to fight against injustice.
Vladimir Putin – The Russian president keeps popping up on everyone’s cover pages. While he took part in successfully planning and executing the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, he was harshly criticized for his political decisions in the Ukraine-crisis.
Jack Ma – The CEO and founder of the Alibaba Group, a Chinese e-commerce company, is currently the richest man in China with an estimated net worth of 29.7 billion dollars.
Masoud Barzani – The president of the Iraqi Kurdish region is still pushing for the region’s independence. Moreover he has caused a stir with his involvement in the ongoing fight against the Islamic Iraq and Greater Syria.
Tim Cook – As the current CEO of Apple he introduced their newest items (iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and the Apple Watch) and developments (Apple Pay). Furthermore he openly came out as gay and is therefore the first homosexual Fortune 500 CEO.
The Ebola Caregivers – West Africa is still stricken with what is considered the biggest Ebola outbreak in history. Many people decided to help and take care of those who suffer from the fatal disease.
Roger Goodell – In his position as Commissioner of the NFL Goodell may be the most important man in sports. But as he dealt with various controversies such as the Ray Rice public abuse incident, his leadership qualities have been questioned.
I believe Taylor Swift to be a fantastic musician, who is talented and undoubtedly influential. It has to said that in comparison to the other gentlemen and groups above, the range of her impact is limited. She may reach her fans and the music and pop culture industry, but her competitors have an effect on whole countries, and I’d maybe even go as far and say on humanity in general. It’s a hard choice to make, because many of the people mentioned above have changed the world. Whether the change was positive or negative is debatable. All I know is that I am sad to see that only one woman made it onto the final list of contenders.
Time’s Person of the Year 2014 will be announced December 10.
