A teaser trailer for the latest incarnation of Thunderbirds has been released alongside a glimpse of the style of the new TV series.
As a child of an era where there was no CGI, I grew up watching re-runs of the ever so slightly creepy marionettes that made up the team at International Rescue – known as the Thunderbirds. Thankfully for my childhood nightmares, the new version will use live action sets overlaid with CGI – which has been handled by the incredible team at Weta Workshops – the magicians behind Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. That in itself is enough to get excited about!
In this reboot of the 1960s TV show, which follows the new adventures of the Tracy family who are led by father Jeff, the five Tracy brothers (Scott, John, Virgil, Gordon, and Alan) operate the secretive group and carry out rescue missions in Thunderbird vehicles one through five.
2015 is also the 50th anniversary of the original show, which was created by Gerry Anderson and screened to audiences worldwide in the 1960s and 1970s.
The general vibe across social media is one I can agree with – that we hope it’s better than the last movie, although as more than one commentator has said online, it couldn’t be any worse. If you haven’t already experienced the 2005 Thunderbirds movie with Ben Kinglsey and Bill Paxton – don’t rush. I’m fairly sure you have more valuable ways to spend 95 minutes of your life.
The voice cast for Thunderbirds Are Go! includes Rosamund Pike as Lady Penelope, Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Tracy brothers Gordon and John, Rasmus Hardiker as both Scott and Alan Tracy, and David Menkin as Virgil Tracy. Additionally, returning in his original role is David Graham as Aloysius Parker.
In the 20 second clip below, we are given nothing but a call of distress, but we are linked to the Thunderbirds’ official website, which currently is just collecting email addresses for future news releases.
