2014 has been the year of the Groot. The year of the Raccoon. The year of the Star-Lord. Ever since it burst onto our screens at the end of July, the little known Marvel characters from Guardians of the Galaxy have become household names the world over. I mean who didn’t fall in love with the dancing baby Groot? Or how about answer a question thrown at them with a short, succinct “I am Groot”? 42 may be the answer to life, the universe and everything, but that catchphrase is the response.
Having grossed over $771 million in box office revenue around the world, making it the top grossing movie of the year, it is no surprise that many have jumped on the Guardians bandwagon, and what better way to pay tribute to the film and show it some love, than to poke fun at it? And that is exactly what the folks over at Screen Junkies have done with their latest honest trailer.
“Without the rights to some of its most popular titles and its biggest stars contracts about to expire,” the trailer begins, “watch Marvel Studios scrape the bottom of the barrel for their obscure ’70s comic book that barely anyone read, proving once and for all that we’ll see anything if you slap Marvel’s name in front of it.”
Described as “Marvel’s attempt at Star Wars” that features “heroes you’ve never heard of… protecting a planet that none of them live on from an undeveloped villain whose problems you couldn’t care less about,” they can’t hold up the pretence for long, caving and admitting that they’re “really reaching here” because “it was a fun movie.”
Introducing viewers to the key heroes in the film, they draw comparisons with other Marvel heroes. Star-Lord is really Captain America. Gamora, Black Widow. Rocket, Tony Stark. Basically they are the Space Avengers. Luckily it’s “technically not stealing if they’re ripping off themselves.”
The hilarious trailer continues in this vein for a glorious five minutes and really deserves your complete attention for that whole time. Believe me, with gags and innuendo flying about a mile a minute, you don’t want to miss a thing.
