Ed Sheeran has had a pretty fantastic year, by all accounts. Not only has he scored 2 number one singles and a number one album, he has also booked a three night run at Wembley Stadium for next summer, and now he’s been named as the most-streamed artist in the world by Spotify.

No, before anyone asks, Taylor Swift didn’t feature in the chart.

Sheeran has racked up an astounding 860 million streams through the site, with Eminem and Coldplay coming in second and third respectively.

His most recent album, x, made him the first artist to sell a million copies in the UK during 2014 this week, and it has been played 430 million times through Spotify.

Katy Perry topped the female charts, ousting Rihanna who has held the title for the past two years. Ariana Grande came in second, and Lana Del Rey third.

Pharell Williams’ “Happy” was the service’s most listened to track, probably because it’s fabulously uplifting and enjoyable, with Clean Bandit in second with “Rather Be” and Calvin Harris’ “Summer” coming in third.

All in all, Spotify said that more than 50 million of us have listened to 7 billion hours of music in 2014, and it’s not even over yet.

The chart makes for some really interesting reading, and as a proud Brit I’d like to say how fabulous it is to see talents such as Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith riding so high. It’s been a great year for musiv the world over, and here’s to an even better 2015!
