A new film dealing with the issues a transgender teen faces is in the works, and though it might be a small indie flick, it’s managed to secure a big name cast already.

Naomi Watts, Elle Fanning and Susan Sarandon have all signed on for Three Generations, which will be directed by Gaby Dellal with a script from Nikole Beckkwith, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The story will follow a New York teen by the name of Ray (to be played by Elle Fanning), who is transitioning from female to male. Her mother Maggie, played by Naomi Watts, is trying to come to terms with the transition and all it means. Meanwhile, Maggie’s mother Dolly (Sarandon) is described as “a quick witted music manager” who lives with her lesbian partner, Frances. Dolly is having a hard time wrapping her head around Ray now being raised as a male, and the life-altering decision Ray has made. She also cannot fathom Maggie’s inability to move out of the house she grew up in.

Production for the film begins in New York early this month.

I have to say, I am pleased to see such a sensitive subject finally being talked about and explored more in mainstream media. Gender is never a black and white issue and gradually more and more people are starting to see this. Shows like Transparent, which has been a huge hit on Amazon Prime Instant Video, and (hopefully) films like Three Generations will only help further people’s understanding about the issues transgender people face.

I am pleased to see the film has attracted big names too, as this will only help its reach and appeal to the public. I would like to see the title changed though. It’s just me being picky, but I don’t like it! We don’t get anything from it and it tells us nothing other than there is three generations in the film.

Three strong actresses individually, together should make quite the tour de force if the script and direction is strong. Here’s hoping Three Generations will be a big hit.
