Don’t Be A Drag Just Be A Queen…. and watch ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’

So RuPaul’s Drag Race, if you haven’t heard of it, then you should. Go look it up.

Thanks to Netflix I’ve been able to watch all six glorious seasons and cannot wait until the seventh. But while we wait for the new series to come next year, I thought I would share with you some of my favourite drag queens from each season.

So here it goes…..

  • Nina Flowers (Season 1)

Most people I know who have watched RuPaul’s Drag Race online have skipped the first series to get straight to season 2 which is supposedly better. Well, I say don’t! Yes from season 2 the set may get bigger and better, with more celebrity guest judges, and overall more polished queens, but……and it’s a big but, if you do, then you miss out on the uniqueness that is Nina Flowers.

Born as Jorge, Nina is from Puerto Rico and has been performing since 1993. Her unique style comes in the form of tattoos, fierce mohican hair styles, and extreme eye makeup. Nina was loveable from the start, creating a catchphrase when calling everyone ‘loca’ and is often spoken about warmly by the other contestants. Nina now DJ’s across Puerto Rico and America, featuring on dance tracks that can be found under her name on itunes.

  • Raven (Season 2)

Season 2 probably wasn’t one of the best seasons, but Raven, also known as David, caught my eye from the start and continued to stand out throughout the competition.

Not always a particularly friendly character to the rest of the queens, but sometimes honesty is the best policy, which meant that Raven’s say it how it is personality earned her respect in the end, and her portrayal of Paris Hilton in the challenge ‘Snatch Game’ was spot on and definitely gave us all a laugh.

  • Raja (season 3)

Raja is one of my all-time favourite contestants of RuPaul’s Drag Race who probably has the most impressive career history compared to the others. Working as a makeup artist on America’s Next Top Model, therefore forming an acquaintance with Tyra Banks, and also doing make up for good friend Adam Lambert. Raja, also known as Sutan Amrull, has also had modelling careers, along with performing drag.

Raja has presented RuPaul’s Drag Race Fashion Photo Ruview on Youtube with Raven, and even has a single on itunes ‘Zubi Zubi Zubi.’

  • Manila Luzon (Season 3)

Manila is another all-time fave, otherwise known as Karl, a half Philippino who’s elegant, yet quirky fashion sense, paired with comical facial expressions makes her unforgettable and extremely likeable. Especially after impersonating Imelda Marcos in ‘Snatch Game’ which had us laughing until we cried.

Since appearing on RuPaul’s Drag Race, Manila has dabbled with a music career, with first single ‘Hot Couture’ being my personal favourite. Also joining forces with other contestants Jinkx Monsoon and Latrice Royale, and Manila now has an album to her name, ‘Eternal Queen.’

  • Carmen Carrera (Season 3)

Carmen was on the same season as Raja and Manila, and along with other contestant Delta Work, the four of them made a clique name ‘Heathers’ referencing the 80’s film about high school cliques. I loved the Heathers, and even though the show tries to discourage contestants relying too much on each other, it was really refreshing to see a group of queens forming a long lasting friendship which we hadn’t witnessed on any of the previous seasons. The group even have a song together now, their own version of ‘Lady Marmalade.’

Carmen and Raja certainly had heads turning during their lipsync to Paula Abdul’s ‘Straight Up’, where Raja fought competition by stripping down to underwear, which caused Carmen who was already in just a bikini to go completely bottomless. Other contestant Alexis Mateo referred to it as “soft porn.” I thought it was great.

Carmen was formerly known as Chris, however since appearing on RuPaul’s Drag Race, has undergone gender reassignment surgery, constantly living life as Carmen now, being a role model for all transgender men and women.

  • Sharon Needles (Season 4)

Also known as Aaron, Sharon certainly put a whole new spin on drag queen, proving that anything can be done. One of Sharon’s most bizarre, yet fantastic looks on the runway was at the beginning of season 4 where contestants had to salvage material from a drag queen zombie apocalypse, and create looks which emanated the same theme. While the other contestants stuck to tradition, still walking out in wigs and gowns, Sharon challenged judges by sporting a full zombie outfit, complete with bald head and bleeding mouth. No doubt Sharon won that particular challenge for being so daring.

Lover of all things hellish and spooky, Sharon now has an album ‘PG-13’ which even features RuPaul on the first track. A mixture of punk, rock, and pop sounds makes this album a great listen for fans of all kinds of music.

  • Alaska (Season 5)

Famous for her greeting of “hieeeeeee”, Alaska is the former boyfriend of Sharon where they became Drag’s very own power couple. No longer together, the pair remain very close friends and still do drag appearances together.

Alaska is extremely quirky and comical, often giving off a Lady Gaga look. She actually auditioned for every season of the show until being cast in season 5, and we are so glad they finally gave her a chance. Meeting the other contestants wearing a horse head, it was obvious from the start that Alaska, also known as Justin, would be someone we wouldn’t be forgetting.

Alaska is now one of the American Apparel girls, alongside Courtney Act, and Willam who were also contestants of seasons 4 and 6 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Not only does Alaska have an advertising deal, but also joins fellow contestants by having her own music on itunes. Singles include ‘Your Makeup Is Terrible’ and ‘Ru Girl’, whilst Alaska also features on Sharon Needles’ track ‘Kai Kai’, and Adore Delano’s ‘I Look F****n Cool.’

  • Detox (season 5)

Detox was on Alaska’s season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, and the two formed a close friendship along with Roxxxy Andrews where like the ‘Heathers’ from season 3, the threesome combined their names and called themselves ‘Rolaskatox.’

Also known as Matthew, Detox is the plastic surgery obsessed drag queen who gave us catty, comical comments and another quirky style which made me a fan. One of my favourite Detox moments was her flirting with a gay army guy that they had to transform into drag for a challenge.

Detox was part of a pop group with other drag queens Willam Belli and Vicky Vox, however the group are no longer together.

  • Adore Delano (season 6)

Also known as Danny Noriega, who you may already know from American Idol, Adore Delano was one of the youngest contestants on RuPaul’s Drag Race whose likeness to Katy Perry, mixed with a foul mouth and great sense of humour, leaves you either wanting to date, befriend, or mother the gorgeous drag queen.

Admittingly Adore wasn’t my initial favourite of season 6, but sometimes stars need time to shine and that was definitely the case with Adore whom I now can’t get enough of.

Danny mixes his love of music and drag by pursuing a music career as Adore. Debut album ‘Till Death Do Us Party’ is out now, and I am currently obsessed with every single track so I definitely recommend you check it out, (as long as you’re not offended by bad language.)
