Great news for Community fans – series alum Donald Glover has joined Ridley Scott’s latest sci-fi epic, 20th Century Fox’s The Martian.
Starring Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, and Jeff Daniels, The Martian tells the story of an astronaut stranded on Mars (of course), who must survive on his own until his rescuers arrive. Glover will star as a bright young NASA employee, according to The Wrap.
Since leaving Community last year (part-way through the fifth season), Glover has been busying himself with other projects. His second studio album, Because The Internet, was released last December and a mix tape, STN MTN, and EP, Kauai came out earlier this month.
Glover is currently filming Magic Mike XXL¸ recently finished Lazarus and will be seen in Disney’s Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day at the end of this month. I’m exhausted just reading about it all.
The Martian is based on Andy Weir’s well-received e-book, with a script written by Drew Goddard (who was previously on board to direct). As the film has a release date of November 2015, hopefully filming should begin soon.
I’m not the greatest fan of sci-fi movies, and the horrific Gravity may have put me off them for good. However I love Ridley Scott and am willing to give anything he works on a chance.
Apparently, The Martian is more a cross between Apollo 13 and Castaway than 2001. Christopher Nolan, who is usually sensible, also has a “space” flick out this year; the Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway vehicle Interstellar.
Could this herald a slew of inter-galactic films that are more plot than lasers? That would certainly be interesting, although oddly Jessica Chastain is in Interstellar as well as The Martian. Is she the new Sigourney Weaver, doyenne of outer space cinema?
Anyway, I’m holding out hope that Damon’s best buddy Ben Affleck will sign up; we can only dream.
