In news that will make a lot of UK theatre fans extraordinarily happy, Broadway heartthrob Aaron Tveit has been announced as the latest cast member to join the London production of Assassins, WhatsOnStage reports.

Tveit will play the role of John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln, in the musical that imagines the coming together of the disparate men and women from history who attempted to take the lives of serving American presidents, and in some cases succeeded.

Jamie Lloyd will serve as director, and, having recently worked on successful London productions of Urinetown, The Commitments and Richard III, is yet another reason this show cannot be missed!

The show has music and lyrics by the genius Stephen Sondheim and book from John Weidman, and the most recent 2004 Broadway production won five Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical and Best Featured Actor for Michael Cerveris as Tveit’s character, Booth.

By taking on the role of Booth, Tveit joins a large and exciting cast including comedian and previous Doctor Who companion Catherine Tate, Jamie Parker, Harry Morrison, Stewart Clarke, Carly Bawden, Simon Lipkin, Mike McShane, Andy Nyman and David Roberts.

Assassins will run from November 21 to March 7 at South London’s Menier Chocolate Factory, which is quite literally a chocolate factory-turned-theatre, and I will most definitely be catching this show as many times as I can get away with! As a huge Tveit fan I have been waiting for his talent to hit London for years now, and I am beyond excited to finally get to see him perform live.

Tveit is best known for originating the roles of Gabe Goodman in Next To Normal and Frank Abagnale Jr in Catch Me If You Can. In addition to this, he has also appeared in stage versions of Rent, Hairspray and Wicked, as well as the 2012 film adaptation of Les Miserables. More recently he has starred as Mike Warren in USA Network’s Graceland, although his character seemed to be killed off in the second season’s finale. If this casting news is anything to go by, it really does seem like Warren will not be surviving corrupt cop Sid’s attack!
