“A friendly desert community where the sun is hot, the moon is beautiful, and mysterious lights pass overhead while we all pretend to sleep.”- Welcome to Night Vale. episode 1-Pilot
I scream, you scream, we all love Halloween!! The costumes, the candy, the movies, the music, Halloween has become the Christmas before Christmas. We all have our favorite scary or spooky movies that we have to watch to commemorate the season, and if I don’t hear “Thriller” and “Monster Mash” at least 5 times, then Halloween is a bust.
But this year, I urge you to tune your ears to something a little different. Strange, weird and wonderful, the podcast of Welcome to Night Vale encompasses everything a good Halloween is made of. Glow Clouds, strange hooded figures, angels, mysterious lights in the sky, an old woman who secretly lives in your home, a man in a tan jacket who everyone sees but no one remembers, librarians who are described as “the most fearsome creature imaginable”, and a scientist who has come to town to investigate it all.
Cecil Gershwin Palmer, voiced by the ever-talented, velvet voiced Cecil Baldwin, is our tour guide through this strange and dark and quirky place that is Night Vale. If ever there were a voice who could soothe you while simultaneously telling you the most horrible thing you’ve ever heard, his would be it.
But please, don’t just take my word for it. There are 56 episodes for you to choose from. Starting from the beginning is always my preference, but hey, it’s Night Vale, and doing things weird and out of order is totally acceptable.
If you need a little added incentive to listen, here’s a little YouTube video someone made set to the “This is Halloween” song which features a lot of the fanart that has been created in honor of Welcome to Night Vale. If you’re the visual aid type, this will help. Or maybe it will confuse you. Either way, it’ll be fun.
