Gone Girl, the new Ben Affleck movie, has released a new clip showing the first meeting between Affleck and co-star Rosamund Pike’s characters.

The film centres on the disappearance of Amy Elliott-Dunne, played by Pike. Her husband Nick (Affleck) becomes the chief suspect in the case and as the movie moves on, more and more unsavoury truths emerge from the couple’s past.

Based on the 2012 novel of the same name, written by Gillian Flynn, Gone Girl is described as a mystery-thriller, and certainly the trailer does seem very dark. For those who have read the novel, Flynn has stated that the film will deviate from the original story owing to a different structure of the film.

Directed by David Fincher, the film also stars Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry and Carrie Coon. Previews have received strong critical acclaim, with praise for Fincher’s directing style and Affleck and Pike’s performances.

My opinion? Well, ordinarily I would stay away from thrillers in case they scare me. I really am a grade A wimp, folks. That said, the trailer really does look like Gone Girl will be an intelligent film, and when Affleck gets a role right, he really is an incredible actor. (We won’t mention Gigli.)

Rosamund Pike is also a very gifted actress, and I have an unfathomable amount of love for Neil Patrick Harris in any given role, but, and this is a big sticking point for me; the film is rated R for extreme and graphic violence, and I’m not entirely sure I can manage that.

For those brave souls among you, Gone Girl will be released in the US on October 3. Let me know what it’s like while I cower behind a cushion.
