If you are an Apple geek like me there is nothing more exciting than an Apple Keynote event. For those who don’t know what these events are, they are the bells and whistle announcement events for new products for us to drool over and lust after.
Today in Cupertino, California Apple’s Tim Cook took the stage to announce the newest model of the iPhone, which as expected will come in two different sized models. Both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have bigger screens than the current iPhones however they are even thinner and have the more rounded look which we have been used to on the recent iPads. It is not just the size and shape that is new, Apple have put more powerful chips into these beauties and it means our phones can do even more, AND they have improved the battery life as well. The screens will also be retina HD which means images and text will be even clearer. The screen quality has always been something that Apple have worked hard to improve on with every new incarnation of their devices, and if my favourite photos will be even clearer well then I am a happy girl.
The iPhone 6 will have a 4.7 inch screen, a 1334 x 750 Retina HD screen with a 1 million pixel display capability, and the “iPhablet” iPhone 6 Plus will have a 5.5 inch screen with a 1920 x 1080 Retina HD which will have display capability of 2 million pixels, which is eye-wateringly crisp and clear. Underneath the hood, the new phones will have the new A8 processor chip and the M8 motion sensor chip which will mean that the device will run faster, smoother and allow the phones to do even more.
The new iPhones will allow the WIFI to connect up to 3 times faster than the current models, and the new devices will also support a wider range of LTE or 4G signals, which should mean that calls will be clearer and should drop less. For me one of the best developments Apple have made in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is the improvement in battery life. I love my iPhone however I will be the first to get frustrated at the poor battery life on the current models, I can go nowhere without carrying my charger and a portable charger in case I can’t get to a power outlet. The iPhone 6 will have a 14 hour talktime and the iPhone 6 Plus will have a 24 hour talktime!!
As was discussed in the Keynote, many people use their iPhone as their main camera and with the new 8MP iSight camera will have something called New Focus pixels which will improve auto focus and phase detection, features that are usually only seen on SLR cameras. The iPhone 6 will feature digital image stabilisation and the iPhone 6 Plus will have optical image stabilisation, both which will help to get rid of those blurry out of focus photos. The new FaceTime HD front facing camera has an improved sensor, which will mean we can all create even better selfies!!
Both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus will be available in 16GB, 64GB and an eye wateringly large 128GB. Both devices will be available in Gold, Silver and Space Grey.
All in all I have to say that I was impressed with the developments made for the new phones and I am sure that the queues will be starting to be one of the first to buy the iPhones when they are available from September 19, and the units can be pre-ordered from September 12.
Now on most Keynotes that would be all we would get however the iPhone 6 was just the first announcement of the event which was nearly 2 hours long. The next thing that Tim Cook was excited to talk about was Apple Pay, which will be make use of the NFC chip within the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Apple Pay will allow us to make contactless payments with the touch of an iPhone! The facility will only be available in the US to begin with, however it would be expected that the scheme will roll out to more countries as time goes on. Apple already have the Passbook which means you can add things like your Starbucks card, and boarding passes for airlines onto your phone, so the addition of the NFC sensor has meant that the Passbook has taken on a new lease on life which is very exciting.
For a long time now, it has been rumoured that Apple have been working on what was dubbed the iWatch, however we did not expect to receive details of such a device at today’s event. Well weren’t we wrong!! Tim Cook made a big fanfare of a new product and what a new product it is. That’s right ladies and gentleman, the Apple Watch is here. Now I know what you are thinking, Samsung has already brought out a device like this and yes that is true Apple are not the first people to the party on this, however they have certainly taken the market to a whole new level.
The Apple Watch is simply beautiful, there is no other way to describe it. The device which will work with iPhone 6 and 6 Plus AND iPhone 5, 5C, and 5S is a watch, a fitness aid, your maps as well as allowing you to check your latest emails, tweets, text messages. It is touch screen, and the traditional crown on a watch has been redesigned to become a digital crown to allow you to zoom in and out of maps, scroll through messages and much, much more.
Talking about the device Apple CEO Tim Cook said “We set out to make the best watch in the world. It’s precise, synced to the internet, accurate to within 50 milliseconds. It’s customisable and also a comprehensive health and fitness device.”
The watch face is totally customisable and so each watch can be totally different. I fell in love with the dancing Mickey Mouse, it took me straight back to my childhood. Unique features include Digital Touch where you can send messages to contacts via the watch, and you can even send someone your heartbeat! The device will also be able to be used as a remote control for Apple TV, a viewfinder for your iPhone camera, and you can even use it as a walkie talkie. Whilst watching just what the Apple Watch will be capable of my first thought was “I have no real need for this, but dear God I need one in my life.”
The Apple Watch which will be available from early 2015 will come in three models, and is customisable with different straps including metal and leather straps.
