Rudderless is the Directorial debut from acclaimed actor William H Macy, and was screened at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Starring Billy Crudup, Anton Yelchin, Selena Gomez, Felicity Huffman, and Laurence Fishburne. Check out the trailer below:

After watching the trailer I had two thoughts: Firstly that I am possibly going to need tissues at some point in this film, possible several. My second thought was that Anton Yelchin looks 12 in this. Lead actor Crudup, first came to my attention in Almost Famous. That’s pretty much all I’ve seen him in that I can openly say I remember. Anton Yelchin, was last seen in Jim Jarmush’s Only Lovers Left Alive as the “zombie” human assistant to Tom Hiddleston’s vampire Adam. Yelchin is probably known to a wider audience Pavel Chekov in the hugely successful franchise reboot Star Trek, and its sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness.
The story takes us through former high-profile advertising exec Sam Manning’s loss as his son Josh is killed in a University shooting massacre.  Manning decides to go ‘off the grid’ and lives on his boat consumed in grief and alcohol and numbing his pain.  Finding his son’s demo tapes, he discovers that he has been so disconnected from his only child  that he was unaware of this talent.  In listening to the original folk/light rock style songs, Manning hears of his son’s now lost dreams (see tissues again!).

Sam decides to learn the songs and culminates in him playing one at a local bar, and this is where we meet Quentin (Yelchin) who hears the songs and is immediately enthralled. They go on to form a band which, based on the generation gap, will no doubt give the film a chance for some comedic moments.

The music and friendship changes both their lives. The film also features Selena Gomez and this will hopefully help her shed her sweet Disney image and move into serious actress territory… better than some other starlets who shed their clothes and dignity.

The film is set to be released in theatres and through video-on-demand beginning October 17, 2014
